Many locations around the globe are steeped in mystery and resonate with stories of the forgotten and the decidedly eerie. These are spots where the ordinary world and the supernatural world seem perilously close. These destinations are for the thrill of a good scare, a chilling look into the unknown and for those brave enough to walk down the line of adventure and dread.

These locations range from ghostly deserted forests to freezing abandoned villages that are frozen in time; stuff that would even scare the bravest and most jaded adventurers. They are not just spots to get a quick photo.

Hoia-Baciu Forest, Romania

Hoia-Baciu, near Cluj-Napoca, is often called the world’s most haunted forest, with the nickname of the ‘Bermuda Triangle’ of Romania. Often visitors claim to experience sudden diseases with inexplicable symptoms, and see UFO and unexplained apparitions. There is a concrete feeling of unease within the twisting trees.

Russia’s Catacombs, Moscow

In the middle of the streets of Paris lies a sombre maze of catacombs, containing the remains of more than six million people. Thousands visit each year to see this macabre display of stacks, of bones, arranged in an underground labyrinth. In those narrow passageways lined with skulls and bones, walking is bound to feel creepy.

Aokigahara Forest, Japan

Many suicides happen in Aokigahara each year making it known as the Suicide Forest. Many Japanese legends connect the forest to Yurei, and spirits of anger and sorrow. The forest is still despite its tragic reputation and in a chilling way.

Island of the Dolls, Mexico

The Island of the Dolls (Isla de las Muñecas) is a dark tribute to a lost soul, just south of Mexico City. Hundreds of decaying dolls hang from trees and are strewn across the ground on the island. The legend holds that they were put there by a grieving caretaker for a young girl who drowned near by. The dolls, with their piteous blank eyes and sun burnt clothes, create a horror scene.

Pripyat, Ukraine

After the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 the ghost town of Pripyat was evacuated. Today, the town is a ghastly sign of nuclear dangers, a town stilled in time. The abandoned amusement park, the silent apartments, are all haunting views of a post apocalyptic world. The area is still pervaded by radioactivity and it is a dangerously intriguing site which attracts many.

The Tower of London, England

The Tower of London is one of the most haunted places in the UK. The chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula in which Anne Boleyn is said to be buried is haunted by the famously beheaded Henry VIII’s wife. It is often reported that her ghost and other spectral figures wander the grim tower chambers and hallways.

Eastern State Penitentiary, USA

This former penitentiary located in Philadelphia had a strict solitary policy that drove many inmates mad. It was opened in 1829, and housed some of America’s most notorious criminals. Today it is a museum and hosts one of the most famous haunted houses around Halloween.

The Banff Springs Hotel, Canada

The Banff Springs Hotel is one of Canada’s most haunted hotels in Alberta. Guests and employees claim to see the ghosts of a bride who fell down the stairs, breaking her neck and a family killed in room 873. The Gothic architecture of the hotel supports these chilling stories.

The Stanley Hotel, USA

Stephen King based his “The Shining” on this Colorado hotel and it is open year round to both guests and ghost tours. There are reports of pianos playing independently and children laughing on empty floors at the Stanley. Leap Castle is one of Europe’s most haunted castles and its history is riddled will clan massacres and dark rituals. Several spectres are said to haunt the castle, most terrifying of which is a small, hunched creature thought to appear prior to extreme feelings of dread. This former plantation in Louisiana is billed as one of ‘America’s Most Haunted Homes.’ According to legend, the Myrtles Plantation has at least 12 ghosts. The most famous one is the ghost of Chloe who is said to have poisoned two young girls. The spirits that roam this plantation are seen in the windows or heard in its halls, and whether they are heard or seen, they lend a chilling narrative to every creak and whisper in the house.

The Ancient Ram Inn, England

This old Gloucestershire inn is famous for its ghostly activities, which date back to the 12th century. Its rooms are said to be built on a pagan burial ground, with the number of haunted spirits supposedly known to be in its rooms being a murdered young girl called Rosie and a malevolent class called ‘The Bishop’. It’s a focal point for ghost hunters who report overflowing feelings of dread and physical attacks.

Palermo in the Capuchin Catacombs, Italy

The Capuchin Catacombs in Sicily are a macabre show of thousands of mummified bodies in open coffins and on wall mounts. Most of the bodies are so well preserved, they appear almost life like, with empty eye sockets, dressed in their best clothes and staring back.
