These destinations are not for the faint of heart and if you visit them alone the eerie atmosphere coupled with chilling tales behind them will keep you looking over your shoulder.

Poveglia Island, Italy

One of the most haunted places on Earth, Poveglia Island near Venice was once a quarantine zone for plague victims, and later an insane asylum. However, the island is closed to visitors, not that it has stopped ghost enthusiasts from sneaking a peek. It was said that over 100,000 lives were lost here, and at night, the echoes of past screams still resonate.

Aokigahara Forest, Japan

The Aokigahara Forest sits at the northwest base of Mount Fuji, and it is known as ‘The Suicide Forest’ because of the great number of suicides that take place within its depths. It is hauntingly beautiful and eerily quiet with a silence that is so unnerving, there is no wildlife noise. Tours are guided but disturbing the path alone is dangerous.

French Catacombs of Paris, France

Under the City of Light, Paris’ Catacombs stretch over hundreds of miles with walls covered by the remains of over six million people. These underground ossuaries have a grim atmosphere and people often claim to feel as if they’re being followed. Only a fraction of this labyrinthine network has been open to the public in the past, and the bones of the past are left undisturbed with respect.

The Stanley Hotel’s majestic facade masks a well known hot spot for paranormal activity. It is the inspiration for Stephen King’s ‘The Shining’. Both guests and staff witness mysterious occurrences like piano music drifting through the air, children’s laughter echoeing, and lights flickering. Spirit tours are guided, but it’s the uninvited encounters that keep guests wide eyed in the middle of the night.

Hoia Baciu Forest, Romania

Hoia Baciu, near Cluj-Napoca, is often called the world’s most haunted forest because of the often reported intense paranormal activity and unexplained events. Many visitors have reported a feeling of being watched and anxiousness, and a few have left with inexplicable rashes or burns. Bizarrely shaped trees are visible in the local vegetation, and some areas are completely devoid of vegetation.

With a crumbling cell block and abandoned guard towers, Philadelphia’s imposing Eastern State Penitentiary gives a glimpse into American penal history and its darker side. The site attracts paranormal investigators, who say they find shadows and spine chilling noises reverberating through the walls, possibly leftover from the troubled existence that once was a prison.

Island of the Dolls, Mexico

If you want to feel creeped out, the Island of the Dolls (Isla de las Muñecas) is just south of Mexico City, where hundreds of rotting dolls dangle from trees and are strewn about the tiny island. According to local legend the dolls were meant to appease the spirit of a girl who drowned nearby, but they appear to do much more to unnerve visitors than to calm any spirits.

The Myrtles Plantation, Louisiana, USA

Constructed atop an ancient Tunica Indian burial ground, The Myrtles Plantation is named one of the most haunted homes in the United States. It is best known for the story of Chloe, a slave who reputedly was killed on the premises for having poisoned the plantation owner’s family. Visitors can take nightly ghost tours for a chance to hear scary tales and maybe even come upon Chloe herself.

By day it is a majestic site, by night it is a spectral scene. The “Green Lady,” murdered presumably sometime in the 15th century at the castle, haunts this historic castle, otherwise known as the “Giant of the Loire Valley.” Guests report seeing her face in the tower rooms at dawn and her presence is marked by moans.

Banff Springs Hotel, Alberta, Canada

The Canadian Rockies is home to this stately hotel, where a bride is said to have fallen down the stairs, breaking her neck, and of course there have been plenty of other ghost sightings. Also she is seen as her ghostly figure, and on the staircase and in the ballroom, dancing in the moonlight alone.
