Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary is well known as a place of wildly inhumane conditions and literally solitary confinement that, it’s widely believed, drove inmates insane. Today it is a crumbling relic upon which visitors have reported eerie sounds, shadowy figures and sudden chills.

The Tower of London is an historic monument that also has a bloody past that includes torture and death. It is reportedly haunted by the ghosts of royals who met with tragic fates while imprisoned there, such as Anne Boleyn. Banff Springs Hotel, Canada

The Banff Springs Hotel is a beautiful Victorian structure with a very haunting presence’ to it. Guests and staff have seen a bride who died tragically on her wedding day and a helpful bellman who vanishes after helping guests. A feeling of being watched pervades the old hotel.

Aokigahara Forest, Japan

Aokigahara Forest is located at the northwest base of Mount Fuji. It is known for the ghosts of the dead, or yurei, of Japanese folklore and as a tragically popular spot for suicides. Local rangers discourage exploring the area, which is very forested, because of the risk of getting lost, while visitors often talk about an oppressive silence.

The Catacombs of Paris, France

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland
