The Most Haunted Places in Montana
Montana, known for its expansive landscapes and stunning ruggedness, also possesses an intriguing, less obvious quality: Its haunted locales draw thrill seekers and ghost hunters to it. Montana’s history is studded with frontier battles, gold rushes, and old saloons. The wind carries whispered tales of the paranormal to this day.
Montana has more than scenic views and outdoor adventures to offer those who love a good shiver down their spine. Journey into the eerie, unknown, and undeniably spooky towns and experience the paranormal.
Deer Lodge, The Old Montana State Prison
The Old Montana State Prison is believed to be haunted by former inmates. Most visitors to Cell 1 leave with an overwhelming sense of unease and report hearing inexplicable sounds. Ghost tours tell stories about apparitions that have appeared in the cellblocks and at the solitary confinement area, and the temperature drops serves as a typical sign of a spectral presence.
Garnet Ghost Town
Garnet was once a booming mining town, but abandoned in the early 20th century. Today it’s known for ghostly voices and the occasional piano music that echoes through its empty buildings. A 2010 study found electromagnetic anomalies that couldn’t be explained by the town’s dilapidated wiring, which suggested spirits still hung out in the old saloon and hotel.
Virginia City
It is a ghost hotspot overrun with the spirits of prospectors and outlaws who roamed this preserved 1860s town in the 1800. Patrons at the Bale of Hay Saloon have spotted the ghost of a woman they have been told is a former madam, who keeps an eye on the bar. Visitors have also seen apparitions in local theater, which still puts on 19th century style plays.
The Dumas Brothel, Butte
The Dumas Brothel in Butte was once the nation’s longest running brothel, and now it is a museum with a haunted reputation. It is said the spirit of former Madame Elinore Knott still supervises the premises. In 2015, paranormal investigators recorded a voice they believe is hers, sharply telling them, ‘Be careful,’ in the basement where illegal activities once took place.
Little Bighorn Battlefield
The soldiers who fell at this historic site of the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn, also known as Custer’s Last Stand, are believed to be haunting this site. Visitors also hear phantom gunshots and war cries. Its reputation as a place where the past is felt was enhanced by a 2007 research expedition that documented unexplained shadows moving across the fields at dusk.
The Moss Mansion, Billings
The Moss Mansion is rumored to be haunted by the Moss family in the early 20th-century mansion. Mr. Moss’s cigar smoke still lingers in the air and the rustle of silk gowns can be heard by visitors who believe the sound to be from the Moss daughters. Historical night tours of the mansion are a great chance to hopefully glimpse the family still living in their beloved home.
The Shanghai Tunnels of Havre
The Shanghai Tunnels lie beneath the streets of Havre, where it’s said that unsuspecting patrons were kidnapped and smuggled through the early 1900s. Today tours tell the stories of apparitions crawling through the tunnels as their eerie voices bounce off the walls telling people to remember them or help them find their way home.
Hotel Meade, Bannack
The haunted Hotel Meade is located in the now-defunct gold rush town of Bannack. Apparently haunted by the ghost of a young girl named Dorothy, who was killed sometime during the late 1800s at the former county courthouse turned hotel. She is reported to look out of the windows or giggle in the hallways, her playful spirit greets any visitors that dares to explore.
St. Ignatius Hospital, Colfax
St. Ignatius Hospital was technically just over the border in Washington, but it served many Montanans during its operation. It’s now a historical building and is reputed to be one of the most haunted sites in the Northwest. Sometimes recorded on the tours dare to go near them, disembodied footsteps, screams, and shadows are frequently heard.
The Conrad Mansion, Kalispell
The mansion is a museum built by one of Kalispell’s founders, Charles Conrad, and some say it has several ghosts of the Conrad family.
