Nevada’s Most Haunted Places
Although Nevada is famous for its glitz and glam in the form of Las Vegas, it’s also known for its rich and tumultuous history — and for being the haunt of ghosts and spooky locations that draw in giddy seekers of thrills and partakers of all things strange from far and wide. Nevada is a deep dive into the supernatural with eerie hotels with permanent guests and abandoned ghost towns that aren’t at all deserted.
If you’re a skeptic looking for a good scare or a true believer in the paranormal, these sites will make your spine tingle.
The Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah
The Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah is one of the tallest buildings in Nevada, and reeks of old-world charm and perhaps a few lingering spirits. According to guests and staff, the infamous “Lady in Red” was met with a tragic end by the hand of a killjoy lover, and now she stalks the fifth floor. The Paranormal Investigations Team reported unexplained cold spots and eerie whispers in the hallway where she was said to have been murdered in a 2012 survey.
Goldfield High School
The Goldfield High School, abandoned relic of the gold rush era, is a place where the past won’t graduate. The auditory phenomena reported by paranormal enthusiasts are often characters of disembodied voices and the sounds of children playing. The Nevada Paranormal Research Group has documented significant EMF spikes here, experts say, which suggests something beyond mere echoes from a bygone era.
Virginia City. The Old Washoe Club
The Old Washoe Club is more than just a historically significant building: It’s a location where paranormal entities are undeniably real, even appearing as stars in a few paranormal reality TV shows. According to the club, it’s haunted by a blonde woman and the ghost of a little girl. Investigators recorded what they say are phantom voices on the building’s third floor, which once housed a bordello, in 2009.
Piper’s Opera House
Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City has had performers and patrons reportedly seeing the ghost of John Piper himself wandering the balconies and backstage areas. Visitors often experience sudden temperature drops and glimpses of figures dressed in period clothing, so historical tours quickly become impromptu ghost hunts.
The Silver Queen Hotel
In Virginia City, the Silver Queen Hotel makes ‘sleeping with the lights on’ a good option. The hotel embraces the fact it is haunted as they were purchased by Rosie and Annie two former residents who are now believed to haunt the hotel. Many guests report disturbances at night, and many leave convinced that Rosie and Annie don’t like it when you overstay your welcome.
The Clown Motel in Tonopah
The Clown Motel, possibly the creepiest place in Nevada, is next to an old miners’ cemetery and features over 2,000 clown figurines and dolls that you can’t help but be wary of as you go about your business. As if the graveyard wasn’t spooky enough, the number of guests reporting strange noises and clown dolls acting on their own is alarming.
Boulder Dam Hotel
The historic Boulder Dam Hotel in Boulder City is more than a tourist destination for the nearby Hoover Dam. The halls of the hotel are said to be haunted by the ghost of a construction worker from the era the dam was built. A 2010 study by Ghost Adventures found spectral analysis of the lobby showing abnormal vortex behavior, which they believed was caused by the spirit’s presence.
The Gold Hill Hotel
One of Nevada’s oldest hotels, the Gold Hill Hotel is near the famous Comstock Lode and doesn’t shy away from its haunted heritage. William, a former keeper, and Rosie, who was killed nearby, are reported to be the guests. The apparitions are not just stories told around the candlelight; infrared cameras have caught unexplained figures in the rooms where they are most often seen.
St. Mary’s Art Center
More than just art classes, the St. Mary’s Art Center in Virginia City, was once a hospital for miners. As though reliving their past lives, ghosts of nurses and miners are said to traverse the halls. Eerie anomalies and voices have been recorded by paranormal teams equipped with ghost sensing technology, that suggest the old inhabitants have never left.
The Genoa Bar
The Genoa Bar in Genoa is known as Nevada’s oldest thirst parlor. Stories of ghosts from the past, apparitions reflected in mirrors and glasses, and objects that move on their own, are a few of the things to expect. Patrons and staff alike have reported several strange occurrences. According to a 2013 paranormal investigation, there are sudden temperature changes and ghostly whispers around the antique piano that often plays itself.
