16 Travel Rules You Should Always Break
A travel experience can be exhilarating. You can make discoveries, connect, and make memories to last a lifetime. Plenty of so-called ‘travel rules’ leave us feeling like we’re only allowed to travel a certain way or that there is a ‘right’ way to experience a destination. The reality is that these rules usually increase our stress levels. Travelers are starting to realize that breaking a few rules can be the best thing to happen to you, sometimes the best experiences come from a little rebellion.
Here are some of the most common rules to throw out the window on your next trip for a little more spontaneity and fun.
Research Every Single Detail Before You Leave
Planning to the last minute is easy to get caught up in, but sometimes there’s too much planning that takes the thrill out of discovery. Keep some room for the unexpected – a cute café, a cool little beach you hadn’t yet discovered, or that side street with the cool gallery. Let yourself wander a little, half the fun of travel is stumbling upon things.
Stick to Tourist Hotspots
As famous landmarks are famous for a reason, there’s more to a city than its most photographed sites. Locals tell you the best places to find great coffee, and parks, and experience local culture. Stray from the beaten path and discover hidden gems and really get the feel of the place without the crowds or inflated prices.
Avoid “Dangerous” Places
Safety is always important, but labeling whole regions as “dangerous” is nothing but stereotypes. Before you rule out a place, talk to people who’ve been there, read the news, and go with locals or guides who know the area well. It may lead you to a welcoming and safe place, and you’ll travel deeper, and more authentically.
Travel Light at All Costs
Packing light has its advantages, but sometimes it’s nice to have a little extra to make your trip a little more comfortable and versatile. If lugging a few extra outfits or bringing your favorite camera will make you happier, do it. The secret is balance—pack what feels right for you, not just what’s the ‘minimalist traveler’ thing.
Always Have a Set Itinerary
Itineraries help keep things organized, but they don’t have to control every minute. Leave some space in your day to see what locals are saying or try to adjust to your mood. Be flexible in your mindset and don’t feel pressured to ‘tick off’ every attraction. If something else catches your eye, go for it!
Save All the Big Activities for Daylight
Daytime is certainly nice, but don’t forget what a place has to offer after dark. Nighttime can be different, and if it’s evening markets, illuminated cityscapes, or cultural performances, it can be magical. Don’t forget, not everything worth while happens before sunset.
Only Visit During Peak Seasons
Ideal weather or special events make peak seasons popular, but that’s not the only time to travel. Off-peak seasons have a more relaxed atmosphere, cheaper, and a different view of a place without the tourist crowds. You might be surprised by a quiet beach in winter or a square humming with activity in autumn.
Don’t Eat Street Food
The idea that street food is dangerous is outdated. Street vendors often serve fresh, local authentic meals that can be a window into the local cuisine. Use your instincts and watch the popular stalls, because oftentimes the best meals are on the street, not in a fancy restaurant.
Exchange Money at the Airport
Hefty fees are tacked on airport exchange rates. If you need local currency immediately, then it’s better to exchange a small amount and then find a bank or local exchange service in town. You’ll usually get a much better rate and save money for more fun parts of your trip.
Keep Your Daily Budget Tight
Budgeting is good, but being obsessed over every penny can stop you from having great experiences. Travel costs could spring up on you, so leave yourself a little wiggle room. There are times for splurge; this is when you treat yourself to that local delicacy, specialty souvenir, or anything your heart desires. It will be worth it.
Always Book Everything in Advance
Booking flights and accommodation in advance makes sense, but you don’t have to book everything. Booking everything will save you from surprises, but it will also take spontaneity away. There are times when a quirky boutique hotel or a few more days in a charming village is well worth it to leave a few things unplanned.
Steer Clear of “Touristy” Places Entirely
There’s a reason touristy places are popular: they’re usually beautiful, historic or exciting. Instead of trying to avoid them altogether, try to visit during off hours. These sites can be enjoyed without daytime crowds on a morning stroll or an evening visit.
Don’t Trust Strangers
It’s wise to be cautious, but to assume every stranger is a threat limits your experience. Locals are some of your best resources, they can offer you insight and show you places only they know. If you stay open (with common sense), you might make connections that will make your travels richer.
Avoid Traveling Alone
Solo travel can be daunting but it’s one of the most liberating ways to travel. Traveling alone allows you to travel at your own pace, make all the decisions, and immerse yourself in your surroundings. Solo travel can be enriching
Stick to Your Home Country’s Customs
Traveling is an opportunity to learn and adapt. Embracing local customs helps you connect with the culture on a deeper level, and locals often appreciate the effort. Whether it’s eating with your hands or learning a few local phrases, stepping out of your comfort zone makes for a more immersive experience.
Never Try to Speak the Local Language If You’re Not Fluent
You don’t have to be fluent to try speaking a few words of the local language. Of course, effort of any kind is appreciated, whether it’s a simple “hello” or “thank you” from locals. Sometimes all that’s required is to make an effort, that could bring a smile or laughter to the locals’ faces.
