15 Awful Countries and Cities Folks Traveled to for the First and Last Time
Travel can be exhilarating, but not every destination is a dream. Some places typically make people count the hours till their return flight. Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder, and some spots are notorious for being disappointing.
From chaotic airports to underwhelming attractions, these regions teach us that not every trip ends with postcards and smiles.
Beijing, China
In Beijing, aside from its famous sights such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, where visitation numbers are truly out of control, the city’s thick smog and relentless crowds can be overwhelming. The infamous air pollution makes sightseeing uncomfortable, and cultural practices like spitting in public often leave a sour taste.
New Delhi, India
Not everyone will fall in love with New Delhi’s chaotic charm. Crowded streets, aggressive touts, and extreme heat are what first-timers battle when they land in the city. Combine this with the ever-present honking and the risk of Delhi Belly, and it’s easy to see why some travelers don’t plan a return trip.
Jakarta, Indonesia
Southeast Asia’s least tourist-friendly city is Jakarta. The traffic jams are endless, pedestrian areas are virtually non-existent, and there aren’t many attractions to offer visitors.
Nassau, Bahamas
Nassau, despite its reputation as a tropical paradise, has disappointed many cruise ship visitors. Overcrowded beaches and tourist traps detract from the experience. If you’re looking for authentic Bahamian culture, Nassau may not be the best choice.
Tijuana, Mexico
Many people take to Tijuana for pumping nightlife and authentic tacos – but many find streets run-down and an atmosphere that’s far from welcoming. This border city has lost its allure because of safety concerns and too many touristy spots.
Marrakech, Morocco
Thousands of tourists flock to Marrakech’s bustling souks and stunning roads but it’s not all sunshine and roses. Persistent nagging, aggressive sales techniques, and the labyrinth that is the medina can be tiring for visitors
Venice, Italy
Venice’s canals may be postcard-perfect but the reality can be a tourist nightmare. Many remain underwhelmed by the trite rides on overpriced gondolas to stinky stagnant water in the summer. Plus, the packed streets caused by the immensely growing number of tourists make it an eyesore.
Dubai, UAE
Dubai dazzles with luxury, but its manufactured feel seems cold and hollow. The city’s opulence often overshadows its lack of authentic cultural experiences, and the blistering heat makes outdoor exploration nearly unbearable.
Hanoi, Vietnam
Hanoi has a rich history and a vibrant street food culture, but its relentless pace isn’t for everyone. A tempest of traffic and horn honking are the rules of the road and crossing the street is an adrenalizing hazard.
Kingston, Jamaica
The reggae culture of Kingston and the utterly breathtaking scenery of the mountains is overshadowed by safety concerns. Kingston’s reputation for crime is no joke and many travelers stick to all-inclusive resorts elsewhere on the island.
Manila, Philippines
Visitors to Manila often leave drained rather than delighted. The city is a difficult entry point to the Philippines, with relentless traffic, crowded streets, and few green spaces.
Johannesburg, South Africa
Johannesburg certainly has cultural and historical significance, but the crime reputation puts many travelers off. Heavy security measures and gated communities can even leave you uneasy, instead of relaxed.
Los Angeles, USA
Los Angeles’ sprawling traffic and smog-filled skies don’t match Hollywood’s glitz and glamour. The city is underwhelming and disjointed. Celebrity sightings are also not as frequent as you might think, so if you’re looking forward to that you may be disappointed.
San José, Costa Rica
San José is often seen as a gateway to Costa Rica’s gorgeous rainforests and beaches. There is no charm to the city and no reason to keep travelers there for more than a night or two.
Cairo, Egypt
Cairo is a place of magic awash with awe-inspiring pyramids and ancient history, however, what usually awaits you is chaos. Some visitors feel tense and stunned by aggressive street vendors, traffic, and the occasional tourist scam.
