Airport security can be like a maze of rules, machines and conveyor belts. Getting through it smoothly doesn’t exactly make it anyone’s favorite part of travel, but it can save you time, hassle and embarrassment. However, despite this, many travelers make mistakes that can result in delays, extra screening, or even missed flights.

This guide covers some of the most common security checkpoint pitfalls travelers encounter and how to avoid them. With these points in mind, you will be able to sail through the lines with ease.

Packing Liquids Incorrectly

One of the biggest blunders people make is not following the 3-1-1 rule for liquids: 3.4 ounce containers stored in a single quart-sized bag with each passenger having a bag. If you overlook this simple rule, you will often be confiscated, or you will have to repack. Pre-sort liquids and double check your toiletries before you leave home to save yourself the headache.

Wearing Complicated Shoes

Laces on boots, high heels, or anything that takes time to remove is a recipe for frustration at security. Since most U.S. airports require you to take off your shoes, stick to slip-ons or sneakers that are easy to take on and off. We promise, your fellow travelers waiting in line behind you will silently thank you.

Laptops and Electronics – Forget About Them

Laptops or tablet computers, and other larger electronics, should be removed from your bag and placed in a separate bin if they are taken to the security checkpoints. It can slow down the line and might even get you a side eye from the TSA officer if you forget this. Store electronics in an easy-to-reach spot in your carry-on for a quick grab and go.

Overpacking Your Carry-On

A carry-on bursting at the seams isn’t just inconvenient, it’s a magnet for additional screening. Tightly packed bags may be rummaged through by TSA agents to verify what’s inside. This will help you avoid delays and to pack neatly leaving some breathing room in your luggage. In addition, you will also be able to find your boarding pass or ID when you need it.

Carrying Prohibited Items

You’d think by now most people would know what’s allowed in a carry-on, but security bins are still overflowing with things like scissors, lighters, and oversized toiletries. Before you pack, check the TSA website or app to see a current list of banned items. If you’re not sure about something, it’s better to leave it in your checked bag.

Wearing Too Many Jewelry or Accessories

Metal detectors don’t discriminate, they’ll pick up on every belt buckle, watch and bangle you left behind. To smooth your way through security, keep accessories to a minimum and stow anything extra in your carry on until you’ve cleared the checkpoint.

Not Emptying Water Bottles

Ah, the classic rookie mistake: you forget to dump or drink the water in your reusable bottle. That full Hydro Flask won’t be allowed through security because TSA rules prohibit liquids over 3.4 ounces. Arrive with an empty bottle, and refill it once you’re past the checkpoint to save time.

Ignoring PreCheck Options

If you travel often, not signing up for TSA PreCheck (or its international counterpart, Global Entry) is a lost opportunity. These programs let you skip taking off shoes, belts, and laptops, which makes security a snap. It’s worth the small fee and background check for the time and stress saved.

Not having IDs and Boarding Passes

There’s always that person who gives up half of their bag rummaging around at the last second to find her ID or mobile boarding pass. Don’t be that person. Make sure your documents fit snug in a designated pocket or wallet and are readily available before you step in the security line.

Clothing with Metal Components

If you wear clothing containing too many zippers, studs or metallic elements, the metal detector will light up and invite you to step aside for a bit more scrutiny. If you’re not sure if your outfit will pass the test, then go simple. You can never go wrong with a non-metallic clothing.

Bringing Wrapped Gifts

If you’re traveling with presents, don’t wrap them before you leave. Unpackaging packages during inspections may leave you with torn paper in a pile on your lap. Opposed to that, pack gifts unwrapped, and have a roll of wrapping paper or gift bags to use when you get there.

Rushing Through Security

Rushing in the airport can cause you to make careless mistakes like leaving your belongings behind or forgetting to take your ID after you’ve been screened. Allow yourself a few extra minutes to get through security calmly, and make sure you’ve picked up all your stuff from the conveyor belt before you go.

Not Knowing the Rules for Special Items

Traveling with a stroller? Musical instrument? CPAP machine? All of these items have special screening procedures at each airport. Have the guidelines at hand before you are caught off guard. It is well worth planning for these exceptions as they can save time and help to reduce stress at the checkpoint to a minimum.
