13 Romantic European Getaways That Aren’t as Safe as They Seem
Cobblestone streets, candlelit dinners, and fairytale architecture create the perfect place to fall in love. Europe has many romantic destinations; no wonder couples flock to its romantic corners to make memories for a lifetime. Not all destinations are Instagram-perfect, however. You see the surface charm but there are some hidden dangers you don’t see that trip up the unwary traveler.
Whether it’s safety concerns, scams or natural risks, a little preparation can go a long way. Love and laughter should be the only things you experience on a romantic vacation, not stress or unexpected surprises. Therefore, let’s dive into some of the most magical European destinations with a warning label attached.
Venice, Italy
Despite being one of the most romantic cities in the world, Venice’s canals and gondolas are a challenge. Tourists crowd the streets, and it is easy to find yourself the victim of a pickpocket. Occasional flooding known as Acqua Alta can also make for a change of plans. Travel expert Lisa Thompson says visitors need to be aware of their surroundings, particularly in crowded areas. In 2022 alone, local authorities reported more than 2,000 reported thefts alone. You don’t want to be a part of that statistic!
Barcelona, Spain
Millions flock to Barcelona for its vibrant streets and incredible architecture, but it’s also a hot spot for scams. So couples gazing at Gaudí’s masterpieces might not notice a sneaky hand reaching for their wallet. “Petty theft is common in tourist hotspots like La Rambla”, security consultant Javier Morales reported. Be alert and perhaps avoid wearing flashy jewelry.
Santorini, Greece
Santorini, with its blue domed churches and dramatic sunsets, screams romance. However, its narrow, winding roads are bad for the unfamiliar traveler. Surprisingly, ATV accidents are not uncommon, especially if you and your partner are trying to take an adventurous selfie while driving. It is worth considering travel insurance just in case.
Paris, France
Romantic evenings near the Eiffel Tower can be soured by a scam at a popular landmark, so stay alert. A common scam is fake petitions or friendship bracelets. Last year alone, Paris police issued over 5,000 warnings about tourist scams, so it’s wise to be wary.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Couples flock to Dubrovnik year round for its medieval charm, but its steep stairs and crowded Old Town can be the cause for accidents. The wrong footwear could maim your romantic walk. It’s also brutal in the heat during peak summer months, so hydration is a must.
Cinque Terre, Italy
Seaside villages are Postcard perfect, but they do come with their own set of risks. Injuries from unprepared hikers are common on steep and slippery trails between villages. In 2021, more than 200 hikers needed rescue services because they fell or became exhausted. Helicopter rides aren’t the best way to end a hike!
Prague, Czech Republic
The fairytale atmosphere in Prague makes it a favorite among couples, but its nightlife can be quite a culture shock. Overpriced bars and drinks near more popular clubs have been reported by residents. ‘Go to reputable places, and keep an eye on your drink,’ says Martina Kovářová, who runs the nightlife website pražská Noční stopa.
Amalfi Coast, Italy
Driving the Amalfi Coast is a dream but the hairpin turns can be nerve wracking. It’s not just the inexperienced driver who is gripping the wheel a little too tightly. Renting a car here might sound like a romantic thing to do, but sometimes public transportation is the safer bet.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh’s cobblestone streets and secret alleyways are charming, but when they’re wet, they’re slippery. Surprisingly, tourists exploring on foot are prone to falls, sprains, and fractures. ‘Comfortable, sturdy shoes are a must,’ local guide Angus McKay advises tourists, “The weather can change on a dime, so be prepared with an umbrella.”
Budapest, Hungary
Budapest’s thermal baths are great for couples, but dehydration is real. Tourist incidents tend to skyrocket in the summer as many enjoy a nice dip in hot water and a glass of wine but forget to stay hydrated as they drink. The alcohol in wine is dehydrating, so it is often advised to keep water close by.
Rome, Italy
Rome is troubling to navigate, but the city’s history and romance lure people in. Crossing streets is like frog jumping. It’s too common to be scammed around tourist hotspots like the Colosseum. Stick with licensed tour guides, and don’t let yourself get distracted by overly enthusiastic ‘gladiators’.
Mykonos, Greece
Mykonos is famous for its nightlife, and its amazing beaches, but it can quickly turn into a nightmare as theft is common when visitors let their guard down, especially when it’s late at night. Seasoned traveler George Petropoulos suggests: “They suggest keeping your valuables locked up and not walking alone at night.”
Vienna, Austria
Vienna’s elegant charm makes it a romantic favorite, but watch out for bike lanes. The city’s layout often brings unfamiliar tourists close to collision. It’s anything but funny to have a run in with a cyclist. In busy areas, look out for those designated paths.
