The idea of travel is often thought of as the ultimate adventure; there is just so much one can see and do and so many memories that are definitely worth keeping. Sometimes, reality comes to pack up its bags and brings quite the opposite—your dream vacation becomes a whirlwind of regrets. There are some places where a visit will make you rethink the very idea of exploring the world, from overcrowded hotspots to destinations plagued by challenges.

Not that these are without charm, but the problems they have outweigh their charm. From sky-high costs to nightmarish logistics and safety concerns, these destinations may be off the list for good.

Venice, Italy

Venice in Italy is a beautiful city, but the price tag for such beauty is a downright cost in every sense. The city’s narrow streets are often clogged with human traffic jams as tourists flock here in droves. UNESCO says that Venice is visited by around 20 million people annually, far more than the city’s infrastructure can cope with. Add in the high prices for gondola rides and basic meals and suddenly you wonder whether this sinking city is all it’s hyped up to be.

The fact that you would want to scale the world’s tallest Mount Everest peak may sound exhilarating, but the experience isn’t one you’ll want to live up to its picture-perfect promise. Climbing routes are packed, with climbers being stuck in lines for hours. In addition, the natural beauty of the mountain has been spoiled by litter and abandoned gear.

Santorini in Greece, The whitewashed buildings and blue domed churches of Santorini look beautiful in photographs, but the island’s charm is lost quickly in peak tourist season. Thousands of visitors are dropped off by cruise ships every day, clogging the streets, and causing long waits in restaurants. Even the excessive tourism has led residents to protest, saying it is disturbing their way of life.

Dubai may dazzle with its skyscrapers and luxury, but it’s not for everyone, as the city is too artificial. It is over the top, and lacking in authenticity, many travelers say, and feel disconnected from its displays of wealth. Including blistering heat and strict laws that visitors might not be expecting, Dubai can plummet in a hurry.

Awe-inspiring, there is no question but its popularity means environmental prices. Erosion caused by increased foot traffic has forced Peruvian officials to impose strict visitor limits. Crowds or expensive access and nearby accommodations are common complaints of travelers.

The Pink City of Jaipur is dazzling with breathtaking palaces and forts, though first-time visitors will find it maybe slightly overwhelming. There’s something very draining about the chaotic streets, the hawkers that don’t seem to sleep, the blistering heat. The city has a lot going on, but to some, the sensory overload is a dealbreaker.
