Santa Cruz California Mystery Spot
At the Santa Cruz California Mystery Spot, Gravity seems to go haywire. This strange zone is in the middle of a forest, where everything seems to move and hang at impossible angles. Carhenge Alliance, Nebraska
Picture Stonehenge, but instead of stacks of ancient stones you’ve got a vintage car ring. Whimsically made out of cars, Carhenge is a recreation of the famous English monument. As a tribute to his father, Jim Reinders built this quirky sculpture in 1987. Art and auto culture, while strange, is a compelling combination.
Amarillo Cadillac Ranch, Texas
Ten half-buried, nose down in the dirt classic Cadillacs make up Cadillac Ranch, an art installation located in a Texas field. You’re welcome to spray paint the cars and they’ll become an ever changing canvas of beautiful graffiti. It’s a homage to American car culture created by an art group called The Ant Farm in 1974. These brightly colored cars jutting out of the earth feels almost surreal to see.
The Fremont Troll Seattle, Washington
Public sculpture preys on the fear of the unexpected from beneath Seattle’s Aurora Bridge in the form of the massive Fremont Troll, a creature that could have come straight out of a fairytale. The troll has one bulging eye, and he holds a Volkswagen Beetle in his hand, creepy and menacing. Originally a piece of a neighborhood art project, it was created in 1990 and has become a beloved local oddity ever since.
Niles, Illinois Leaning Tower of Niles
A leaning tower doesn’t necessarily require a trip to Italy. The half sized replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa sits tilting just as famously in the small town of Niles, Illinois. It’s a kitschy, but charming landmark; built in 1934 as part of a park for recreational swimmers. Anyone who loves quirky architectural copies must see this.
Hole N’ The Rock Moab, Utah
Hole N’ The Rock is a 5,000-square foot home carved out of a sandstone cliff in a Utah desert. This unique residence was built in the 1940s on the south side of Kumbia and now is a roadside attraction under the care of the National Trust. There’s a gift shop, a petting zoo, and a memorial to its creators… This is a strange hodgepodge of nature and human inventiveness.
The International Banana Museum – Mecca, California

A giant ball of twine in Cawker City, Kansas grows every year. A local obsession started by Frank Stoeber in 1953, townspeople keep adding to the twine ball each year. Foamhenge Natural Bridge, Virginia
There you have it, called Foamhenge a life size replica of Stonehenge made entirely out of foam. This bizarre attraction has been created by artist Mark Cline near Virginia’s Natural Bridge. The foam “stones” are very realistic, and the foam ‘stones’ have become a long lasting fixture. They were a fun temporary fun structure. It’s a lighthearted take on an ancient mystery that would make history buffs cringe.
The Oregon Vortex Gold Hill, Oregon
The Oregon Vortex is another strange place where the laws of physics apparently fail. Here, objects seem to roll uphill, people can shrink or grow depending on where they stand. To this day it’s been puzzling to visitors, with all manner of theories: optical illusions, magnetic anomalies. It’s certainly creepy, whether you see it as magic or just a trick of the eye, either way it bears description.
