Typically, when we assess livable cities worldwide, major international capitals like Vienna and Tokyo capture our attention. However, the United States has its batch of unique cities currently taking on a life rank thanks to their quality of life, cultural depth, opportunity for economic development, and innovative ecosystems. Which cities win for 2024–2025, though? These top 12 U.S. cities are currently the centers of global livability discussions.

These rankings aren’t just about pretty views or bustling downtowns. So, what makes these cities desirable to live and work in?

This piece breaks down the main stats and insights of these cities using not only the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Global Liveability Index or U.S. News & World Report’s Best Places To Live survey but also other studies and government reports to get the whole picture.

Global Liveability Index Ranking: 23rd

According to the EIU Global Liveability Index, Honolulu is the most livable U.S. city, with beautiful beaches and year-round tropical weather just part of the attraction. This Hawaiian capital is also among the world’s top 25 thanks to its high stability, education, and infrastructure scores.

Living in paradise, though, isn’t cheap. Its high cost of living is an issue. Honolulu ranks within the top 10 U.S. metros with the highest cost of living, and its average 2024 rent rates shot up 3.3% from 2023, Apartment List reports. But those who can afford it are notoriously blessed with one of the most robust urban ecosystems of leisure and opportunity.

Honolulu is remarkable for something other than its beauty. “All livability indices score high because the city spends heavily on education and public safety.” — Karen H., Urban Planner.
