The Most Haunted Places in Colorado: Where Spirits Still Linger
Colorado’s rugged beauty is celebrated for its snowcapped peaks and wildflowers, but not all of its stories are told in the sunlight. Underneath its aesthetic cover, the element of terror prevails; patterns of horror tingle in every corner, and terrifying sights exist there. Whether you’re a skeptic or a lover of a good ghost story, Colorado’s haunted history has a way of getting you.
The Centennial State has long been a hotbed of paranormal activity — from old hotels to abandoned mines. These places aren’t just haunted — they’re saturated in the feelings, tragedies, and enigmas of the past. If you’re ready to get into these supernatural spots, buckle up, the chills are just beginning.
Stanley Hotel
As legendary as you can get, the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park is the grand hotel now made famous due to Stephen King’s, The Shining, which is also said to be teeming with ghostly activity. Guests often hear piano music from an empty ballroom, or children giggling in the hallways, but no one is there. Of course, the hotel has since played up the weirdness by offering nightly ghost tours, but King himself stayed in Room 217, and his experience there left him shaken.
Cheesman Park
In Denver, there’s Cheesman Park, a serene spot for picnics and yoga classes, and an ominous history. It’s built over a former cemetery, and, it’s said, some graves were left behind when it was turned into a park in the late 1800s. Visitors say they can feel sudden cold drafts or see shadowy figures in their peripheral vision. Ghost experts suggest that the restless spirits of those unclaimed bodies might still roam the grounds.
Molly Brown House
The Molly Brown House in Denver, once home to the famous Titanic survivor, is rich in history — and maybe spirits. Lights have been flickering and doors have been creaking open on their own, reported staff and visitors. Others think Molly herself hangs around, keeping her memory alive. Eventually, it became so well known it made it onto the list of 52 Places to Read in 2020, and its Victorian walls have captured recordings of disembodied voices from paranormal investigators.
Central City Masonic Cemetery
The Masonic Cemetery in Central City is spooky but interesting. This cemetery is known for its ‘Lady in Black’ – a veiled figure said to visit the same grave every spring – and curious visitors come year after year. Others think the person is a former lover of the man buried there. But the place itself is eerie enough, surrounded by wind-swept hills.
Hotel Colorado
Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs has been called “the most haunted hotel in Colorado.” This historic establishment has been open for 123 years since 1893 and it’s already survived tragedy including a deadly fire. Everything from objects moving on their own, to phantom smells of cigar smoke wafting through the halls has been reported by guests. Also among the spirits it is said that haunt this elegant retreat: a former chambermaid and a ghostly little girl.
Colorado Prison Museum
This museum, located in Cañon City, gives a chilling look into the lives of Colorado inmates, living and dead. It’s reportedly haunted by the spirits of former inmates and guards, housed in a former women’s correctional facility. Many who visited the jail reported unexplained footsteps, voices, and cold spots that would leave many wondering what or who was still lingering behind its bars.
Gold Camp Road
More than a scenic drive, Gold Camp Road near Colorado Springs is a history lesson. Once a busy route for miners, this historic route is now covered in ghostly tales. Along the road are said to be a few tunnels haunted, and visitors say that they can hear whispers or feel a ghostly hand as they brush them in the darkness. The most famous story started with the tragic collapse of a tunnel that is said to have killed many people.
Cripple Creek
A treasure trove of paranormal activity, this old mining town is. At one time, January was known by miners for finding only snow and cold, which were fitting given the wintery months. Locals have even been telling stories about ghostly apparitions in 19th-century clothing wandering around streets at night. Others think that these spirits are still looking for the fortunes they never had in life.
Pioneer Museum
Colorado Spring Pioneer Museum may be full of historical artifacts, but it has its share of ghost stories, too. The building, housed in a former courthouse, reportedly is home to several lingering spirits. Unexplained phenomena have been reported, such as that staff find things have been moved overnight or they have the eerie feeling of being watched. Some hair-raising evidence has been collected by paranormal teams investigating the site, including strange voices picked up on audio devices.
Fort Logan National Cemetery
The nation’s veterans are honored at Fort Logan National Cemetery, but it’s also a place of mysterious occurrences. When the area is silent, some visitors have said they have seen apparitions of soldiers marching across the grounds or faint bugle calls. While the cemetery is a place of respect and reflection, its ghostly reputation comes from how very tight those connections are between the land these soldiers fought to protect and these soldiers.
