Shanghai Tunnels, Portland

The Shanghai Tunnels, hidden under Portland’s busy streets, was the location for brutal human trafficking and with a crime-riddled 19th-century past. These tunnels were also used to ‘shanghaie’ (forcefully abduct) men to sell them into forced labor. Today, visitors report hearing disembodied voices, strange footsteps and even catching glimpses of a ghostly figure. Brave souls who would troll the tunnels have often reported feeling an overwhelming sense of being watched — like the spirits of the past still haunt Portland’s underground.

Above Portland, tucked away in grandeur, is the historic Pittock Mansion. Henry and Georgiana Pittock lived in the early 1900s structure. Visitors report apparitions that resemble the Pittocks, especially Georgiana’s. The lights in the room flicker, there are cold spots in the strangest places, and sometimes a whiff of roses, the flower Georgiana loved. There’s no doubt the mansion has an energy that’s hard to miss, whether it’s Pittocks happy hauntings or just watching over their old home.

The Benson Hotel, Portland

The Benson Hotel, opened in 1913, has had presidents, celebrities, and apparently, a few ghosts walk through its many halls. Apparitions in vintage clothes, most notably an older man thought to be Simon Benson, the hotel’s original owner, are reported by guests all the time. The experience for those staying at this grand historic hotel includes phantom footsteps, unexplained voices, and objects moving on their own. In some cases, they even say they’ve felt a gentle pat on the shoulder when there’s no one else around.

Hot Lake Springs, La Grande

Hot Lake Springs in La Grande was a luxury resort and sanatorium and is now a magnet for paranormal activity. This Roundhouse built as a glam hotel in the 1930s was a place of tragedy and suffering, and many believe its spirits still roam the halls. The building’s guests have reported disembodied voices, sudden chills, and apparitions all over the building, especially near the old medical wing. The area is eerie enough to draw in ghost hunters who want to experience whatever vaporous vibes still loaf around here from worrisome bygone days.

Famously depicted, the Oregon State Hospital has had its share of scary goings on. The building has been abandoned for so long that it now has an unmistakably haunted atmosphere. Former staff members and paranormal investigators say they’ve seen shadow figures, heard whispers, and experienced strange feelings in the abandoned wings. The spirits of former patients haunt the hospital, some say, and this historic institution is now haunted by the ghosts of former patients.

One of the longest-running continuously operating inns in Oregon, Wolf Creek Inn has been home to many notable guests: Clark Gable; Jack London, Abigail and John Adams, General Custer, and more. They also say a woman roams the second floor and a spectral little boy stalks the guest rooms. Some visitors say they hear children’s laughter when no one else is around, doors opening and closing, and even things moving themselves. If you’re interested in the rich history and strange phenomena of Wolf Creek Inn, it’s a must-visit for you.

This old hotel in the coastal town of Wheeler is not only pretty to look at but also brushes with the supernatural. Known to be home to a friendly apparition nicknamed ‘The Lady in White’, guests and staff alike have also reported things such as unexplained knocking on doors, strange noises, and so on. It’s said that she is the ghost of a woman who once owned the property. The visitors say they feel a warm welcoming presence, but the paranormal activity hasn’t made them any less wary.
