You’ve seen those popular tourist destinations plastered all over social media. Places that some so magical and demand to be seen. But here’s the thing. Not all of them are as good as the hype. Some places are so overhyped that when you finally visit, the letdown is as real as the lines you were forced to stand in.

Travel is not solely about ticking boxes on a bucket list; it’s about experiences. And sometimes you should skip the over-commercialized hotspots to enjoy lesser-known gems. Thinking about visiting these tourist attractions soon? Well, you might want to think again.

Stonehenge

Have you ever driven for hours to see a pile of rocks? That’s what you’re doing when you visit Stonehenge. Certainly, it’s old and strange, but also unsatisfying and underwhelming. It’s a ‘drive by, take a photo, and move on’ type of thing for most people.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Let’s be real: It’s just a sidewalk with stars’ names engraved on it. The souvenir shops and street performers surrounding it just add to the crowded and chaotic atmosphere and it is not nearly as glamorous as you would think. You’re more likely to bump into fellow confused tourists trying to figure out which star belongs to what celebrity than an actual celebrity.

The Mona Lisa, Louvre Museum

You’ve heard about the Mona Lisa a million times, but when you see it in person, you’ll probably wonder what the fuss is about. The small painting is behind a thick sheet of glass surrounded by a mob of tourists trying to get a photo. It’s hard to get close enough to even appreciate it.

Plymouth Rock

Plymouth Rock would not be a grand, historic landmark if you thought it would be. It’s a little rock that’s unremarkable and… in a pit. But most people who visit expect something symbolic, but end up scratching their heads and wondering why they bothered.

Times Square

Yes, Times Square is iconic, but it’s also the sensory overload gone wrong. There are lots of advertisements flashing, it’s noisy and really crowded. If your idea of a good time is being surrounded by tourists, unable to see anything because of billboards, then go for it. Otherwise, the bright lights are about all the charm there is here.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

Yes, it’s leaning. Doesn’t it make for a quirky photo? There’s not much else to do once you’ve taken the obligatory shot of yourself ‘holding up’ the tower. Tourist traps are literally everywhere in the surrounding area, as well as vendors hawking overpriced souvenirs. You might as well take the rest of Italy in.

The Little Mermaid Statue sits in Copenhagen

Well, the Little Mermaid statue is little. This underwhelming, tiny bronze figure is located by the water surrounded by hordes of tourists so you don’t get a clear view. A few minutes after seeing it, you’re ready to move on to something more exciting.

Four Corners Monument

Want to stand in four states at one time? At Four Corners Monument, where Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, meet, you’ll pay a fee to do just that. Once you’ve taken your photo, there’s nothing left to do. It’s literally in the middle of nowhere and most visitors agree it’s not worth the detour.

Niagara Falls (American Side)

The American side of Niagara Falls is spectacular, but if you go to the American side of the falls you could be disappointed. The views are better on the Canadian side, and along with the American side you feel like you are in a tourist trap with the old attractions and casinos. It’s all so tacky and commercialised that it’s difficult to appreciate the grandeur of the falls.

Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah

From an aerial view, Palm Jumeirah looks stunning, but on the ground it’s a different story. The man made island is mostly filled with luxury hotels, and unless you’re staying in one of them, there really isn’t much to do. It’s more of a concept thing than an experience thing.

Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin

Checkpoint Charlie is one of those historical sites that doesn’t quite have the weight of what it represents. Now there are actors dressed as soldiers and souvenir stands cramping that area up. It is intended to hold a lot of meaning but has become another underwhelming tourist trap.

Bourbon Street, New Orleans

I’m sure you know that Bourbon Street is famous for its nightlife, but it’s also loud, crowded, and often messy. There’s nothing wrong with the party atmosphere, for a while, until it just turns into a bunch of drunk tourists and loud music. If you’re after an authentic New Orleans experience you won’t find it here.

Manneken Pis, Brussels

It’s a small statue of a boy peeing called the Manneken Pis. Yes, you read that right. This quirky landmark draws people to Brussels, but most are surprised by how small and unimpressive it is. If you are lucky enough to go there, you’ll probably spend more time searching for it than actually admiring it.

San Francisco, Fisherman’s Wharf

Tourists like to visit Fisherman’s Wharf, but it’s usually jammed and has a little more of an amusement park feel than a quaint coastal spot. Many locals don’t go near it because the restaurants are overpriced. San Francisco has much better places to explore.

Santorini(During peak season)

Few places are as beautiful as Santorini, though if you go when it’s peak tourist season it can be extremely crowded, which can make your dream getaway a frustrating experience. The island can feel like a tourist trap; narrow streets full of tourists, long waits at restaurants and inflated prices.
