Europe is a treasure trove of history, culture, and stunning scenery. Millions of visitors visit the continent yearly just to see the towering mountain ranges and pretty little villages. However, not all destinations are as magical as Instagram makes them out to be. Some spots are famous and can be more of a letdown than a dream come true.
If you’re looking to avoid disappointment when it comes to travel, here are a few spots you won’t have to go out of your way to see.
Paris, France
Paris—the City of Light has its Eiffel Tower, cute streets, and romantic touch, but behind all the postcard material, the reality is usually very different. It’s too crowded with tourists, everything is too expensive and it’s too much of a hustle. Yes, the Louvre is a masterpiece, but spending hours in line to see a small painting of the Mona Lisa will make you wonder what you are doing.
Venice, Italy
Venice, the famed city of canals, still inspires tourists to visit — in spite of its problems. The first sight of its picture waterways is undoubtedly charming, but the overpowering crowds and the less-than-pleasant odor of the canals can quickly ruin the experience. You may wish you were in quieter Italian towns with overpriced gondola rides and restaurants that cater to tourists’ pockets.
Santorini, Greece
This Instagram-famous island has whitewashed buildings and sunset views, but good luck enjoying them in peace. At peak season in Santorini, it’s packed full of tourists, and everything from hotels to eating out to excursions is really expensive. The charm wears off quickly when you’re elbow to elbow with 100 other people trying to take the same photo.
The French Riviera, France
The French Riviera has a fabulous reputation and some beautiful beaches, but it’s not necessarily an easy place to get to, and it can be a bit of a playground for the super-rich. There are packed streets, steep prices, and inauthentic attractions created for visitors.
Stonehenge, England
Stonehenge is one of those landmarks that leaves you both in awe and slightly puzzled—it’s undoubtedly an archaeological marvel, but its true purpose remains a mystery. You will probably spend more time getting to the site than you will looking at the view of the rocks roped off from the public. A documentary, perhaps, would be more enriching.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik was made famous for a certain fantasy series and is now having a hard time dealing with the popularity that it brought. Thousands of tourists are unloaded by cruise ships to its medieval streets every day. It is beautiful, but the chaos of the crowds detracts from that.
Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is Pisa’s famous landmark, and an obligatory photo spot for everyone traveling there, but beyond this famous landmark, the city is lacking in attractions enough to make it a really worthwhile destination, leaving many travelers feeling a little underwhelmed.
The Amalfi Coast, Italy
The Amalfi Coast is undeniably stunning, with its breathtaking views and charming villages. However, the narrow, winding roads, and crowded, tourist-heavy towns can challenge the patience of even the most relaxed travelers. The accommodations and dining options are overpriced, and it’s hard to appreciate the natural beauty that first made this area famous.
Reykjavik, Iceland
Iceland’s capital is often touted as a must-visit, however, its natural wonders are much more interesting. Visiting Iceland is very expensive, and there are not many attractions there, so travelers often regret spending many days in the urban center and not seeing the beautiful landscapes of Iceland.
Brussels, Belgium
Brussels is famous for its waffles, beer, and chocolate, but the city also offers much more to discover. It’s more of a business hub than a tourist destination, and while Bruges and Ghent have much more charm, many visitors still feel like it’s not worth the trip.
