There are nearly 100 in Alaska, and 100 in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York and Maine. Thirty four of the freshwater lakes, excluding the Great Lakes, have maximum depths exceeding 250 feet.

The amount of water stored in natural lakes is much greater than the amount stored in artificial reservoirs. However, economic value of natural lakes is outstripped by that of artificial reservoirs, except for the Great Lakes.
