Travel etiquette has always been a bit like fashion: a bit of timeless classics and a bit of passing trends. Some old-school rules have stuck around past their expiration date like last season’s clothes. Manners are as important as ever, but a few traditional travel ‘do’s and ‘don’ts’ are out-of-date for modern travelers, often creating needless stress or even confusing us with advice that doesn’t hold up.

It’s time to shake things up as we debunk some old travel rules. After all, travel is all about discovering new places and cultures, and a minimum of relaxed, respectful openness is all that’s necessary to mingle with locals and fellow travelers too.

Dress to Impress

Back in the day, boarding an airplane meant dressing in a way that you would for a formal event. Comfort is now the name of the game and you’re more likely to see passengers in cozy hoodies than business attire. No one bats an eye at your athleisure as long as you’re clean, comfortable and respectful. And who’s going to turn down a pair of soft, stretchy pants for a seven hour flight?

Be Wary of Locals

Old travel advice was to keep locals at arm’s length to stay safe. Fortunately, times have changed and today’s travelers are encouraged to share stories, connect and even dine with locals. The world is full of many communities that welcome visitors with open arms, and if you can make connections, you can turn your regular trip into a meaningful one.

Always Have Cash on Hand

Most places in the world now take electronic payments, but there’s still the occasional street vendor or small café that doesn’t. It is no longer necessary to carry a ton of cash “just in case.” It’s nice to have some currency on hand for small purchases, but you don’t have to walk around as an ATM. All you have to do is make sure you know where the nearest ATM is and you’ll be fine.

Never Leave the Hotel Without a Map

Back in the days when smartphones weren’t a thing, travelers held onto paper maps like lifelines. GPS technology has changed the way we get around these days. The days of sprawling city maps and guidebooks under your arm are gone. Just be careful of the area you find yourself in, and stay alert while on your phone.

Pack for All Occasions

The rule of thumb to pack for every situation is a literal burden. Today’s frequent traveler knows that packing light is the way to go, as essentials can almost always be bought locally. You don’t have to carry extra outfits or gadgets just in case. And you’re good to go with a couple of versatile pieces.

Don’t Talk to Strangers

Many travelers are now happy to toss aside this outdated rule. A trip can often be about meeting strangers and sharing experiences. If you do happen to be a fellow travelers or if you’re new to the city, you’d have people around you that can offer you great advice, friendship, a place to crash when you’re out of options. It can open up and add color and warmth to your travel experience, but only to a point.

Tip Generously No Matter What

Once upon a time, travelers were expected to tip generously, even in countries where tipping isn’t the norm. Today, you can easily find local customs and tip accordingly without overdoing it or offending anyone with a quick online search. Tipping goes much further when you’re thoughtful and informed about cultural expectations.

Avoid Public Transportation

An old travel rule says you should avoid public transit because it’s unsafe, but most places now have modern transportation systems that are safe, affordable, and really give you a taste of local life. In fact, some cities have public transportation that is almost a sightseeing tour. Hop on that tram, bus or metro, it may even be the highlight of your day.

Always Stay in Hotels

In the old days hotels were the gold standard for travelers, offering reliable, service. Today there are more homestays, vacation rentals, boutique lodging options than ever before. Not only do these alternatives offer unique experiences, they also tend to get you closer to local culture. If you’re thinking of a cozy cabin or local guesthouse, go for it!

Avoid Local Food Vendors

If you were reading older travel advice, you might have been warned against eating street food or eating in local places because you might catch something. Today travelers are embracing local cuisine. It’s smart to be cautious (and keep some hand sanitizer on hand), but exploring a country’s street food scene is usually where you’ll end up eating the best meals of the trip.

Don’t Speak the Local Language

Years ago, travelers were told to avoid learning a few local words or phrases, as it might lead to confusion, and to stick to English. Learning basic greetings or phrases is now seen as respectful — even endearing. Locals love a small ‘hello’ or ‘thank you’ in the local language and this can be a good way to build some goodwill too.

Stick to Your Itinerary

Strict itineraries ruled every travel day, but those days are gone. A plan is a good thing, but rigid schedules often stifle spontaneous discoveries. The best experiences sometimes occur when you go off course, down a back alley, or say yes to a last minute dinner invite.

Keep to Yourself on Flights

The old rule of politely ignoring your seatmate is fast fading. A friendly conversation on a plane with so many people who want to share stories, tips and laughs can turn a boring flight into a fun one. If the person next to you is open to chatting, then there’s no reason not to get to know them. Who knows? You might find yourself with a new friend.

Always Stick to Known Destinations

In the past, some travelers went to play it safe by avoiding places they didn’t know well. Today, more and more people want to find unique places, whether it’s a small village, a rural countryside or a bustling town that isn’t on everyone’s radar. You often find the most memorable experiences in these lesser known places.

Travel Light on the Gadgets

Back in the day, more gadgets seemed better, but with smartphones being used as cameras, GPS, and guidebooks, it’s no longer necessary to carry around multiple devices. Usually, it’s a smartphone and maybe a backup battery. By traveling lighter you’re able to be more present in each moment and see the sights where you would instead be preoccupied with devices.

Don’t Make Eye Contact

Once this rule applied in places where eye contact was considered confrontational or rude. It’s still important to be culturally aware but a friendly nod or glance is acceptable in most places. This gesture suggests openness and respect for language and culture to unite.
