If time travel was possible, then where and when would you go? Traveling to some cities is all like stumbling into something that would be in a living history book: ancient ruins, cobblestone streets, or immaculate towns. In these cities, you’re encouraged to put your phone down and forget the time as you lose yourself in the past.

Here are 14 of the best if you’re looking for travel experiences that feel like portals. There’s so much more to these spots than just vacation spots. It also contains romantic ruins, ghost villages and altogether frozen bazaars.

Fez’ medina is a cramped labyrinth of snake alleyways, jammed souks, and ancient tanneries which haven’t seen much since hundreds of years ago. But it’s as if the modern world has forgotten Fez and decided to take a donkey full of spices for commercial negotiation. It has a deep history in visual reminders, such as its blue gates and madrasas.

York’s narrow lanes and timber framed houses are a slice of medieval England. York Minster Cathedral and the 13th century massive city walls take you back to knights’ and kings’ times. Petra, Jordan

An ancient world of rose red cliffs, carved into it, is Petra. The ‘Lost City’ was the bustling hub of Nabatean traders who made this their home, and whose intricate temples and tombs, like the iconic Treasury, tell stories of a time when Nabatean traders were in town.
