Pet travel is a heartwarming experience that will add fun to your adventure and give your furry pal the walk to explore new places. However, it is not always easy to travel with pets.

Many pet owners make avoidable mistakes because they don’t know how to best prepare for a trip with their furry companions. Let’s look at common missteps people make when traveling with their pets so your next trip with Buddy or Fluffy is stress-free and memorable.

Skipping a Pre Travel Vet Check Up

One of the first things to do before hitting the road is a trip to the vet. We tend to assume that our pet is healthy as a horse, but it’s a simple check up that can prove otherwise. Of course, this is also the time to ask for any vaccinations (or travel documentation if you are traveling). Better safe than sorry!

Using the Wrong Carrier

Choosing a carrier that is too small or uncomfortable for your pet, especially on longer trips can make them uncomfortable. They need room to turn around and stretch. Check that the carrier isn’t only the correct size but also well-ventilated.

Not Packing a Pet Travel kit

Your pet has needs. Just as you wouldn’t leave home without your essentials, you shouldn’t forget to pack theirs. They can be anxious if you forget to pack in their favorite toys, food, and familiar things. Also bring their food, water bowl, leash, a blanket or toy, and whatever medication they might require.

Forgetting Identification and Microchip Information

Losing your pet in an unfamiliar place is one of the worst things that could happen. Your pets should have tags on their collar with recent identification means. If your pet has a microchip, double-check check your pet’s information is current in the database.

Not Checking for Pet Friendly Accommodations

It is easy to think that all hotels or rental homes are pet-friendly when they aren’t. Before booking your stay, double-check that your accommodation choice accommodates your pet. Showing up exhausted and discovering your companion isn’t welcome is the worst. Plus it adds to travel stress and could incur unexpected fees.

Not Exercising Your Pet

Before jumping in the car or hopping on a plane with your pet, it’s a good idea to give your pet some energy to burn off beforehand. A tired pet is a calm pet. That long walk or some active playtime can minimize their anxiety and make your journey a little easier.

Not Preparing Your Pet for Travel

Travel preparation is something that we take care of for ourselves but fail to do it with our pets. Just like us, pets need time to adjust to new environments, and if they haven’t traveled before, they need more time. Practice small trips before hand to make them accustomed to the car or carrier. Not doing this step can get stressful for both you and them.

Feeding Too Close to Travel Time

Feeding your pet just before a trip may seem harmless, but it can cause motion sickness. Feed them a light meal about a few hours before departure. It will help keep the tummy settled during the journey.

Assuming Your Pet Likes the Trip as Much as You Do

Although you’re ready to get on the road, your pet might not be. Some pets are more or less anxious travelers, as this Discover Magazine article attests. During the trip, watch their behavior, and be prepared to take breaks if they seem stressed.

Travel Laws and Restrictions Ignored

Pet travel rules vary from place to place. Before you travel, it’s best to research specific airline regulations or local laws to know what’s allowed where you’re going, so you don’t have any surprises or delays.

Leaving Your Pet Alone in the Car

This should be a no-brainer but unfortunately, people make this mistake. Even with the windows cracked, the car can heat up quickly which is dangerous for your pet as this Humane Rescue Alliance article attests. If you stop somewhere, take your pet with you or have someone stay in the car with them.

Forgetting to Plan Breaks

It’s easy to forget that traveling long distances means breaks for your pet. Make stops regularly so your pet can stretch, relieve themselves, and get some fresh air. However, a few short breaks can make all the difference in keeping your pet comfortable and happy.
