11 Worst U.S. Cities to Visit
Travel has got to be one of the greatest ways to see a new place, meet new people, and make some memories that will last a lifetime. Not every destination lives up to the hype, however. Of course, some cities are anything but easy despite their charm! For whatever reason — crime rates, a lack of attractions — these places can leave you wondering whether you could have spent your travel time and money somewhere more enjoyable.
Here’s a lighthearted list of U.S. cities you might not want to visit. Every city has its charm and local gems, but the whole experience isn’t what you’re hoping for sometimes. For a smoother-looking travel experience, you may have to think again.
Camden, New Jersey
Famed for its high crime rates and crumbling infrastructure, Camden is often in the news. The city has tried to improve, but the problems are still very serious. For visitors, it can be disappointing not to have too many tourist-friendly areas and attractions with which to play nice.
Detroit, Michigan
Since becoming once a major center of the automotive industry, Detroit has had decades of economic problems. There is some revitalization in the city, but also blight and crime in many areas. Continued situations such as these may make it difficult for travelers to enjoy the city’s offerings.
St. Louis, Missouri
St. Louis has its share of bright spots, as well as crime and economic disparity. The iconic Gateway Arch might draw visitors, but beyond a handful of key attractions, the city can be a little lacking in things to do, especially if you’re looking for a more varied experience.
Gary, Indiana
For decades, Gary has been known for its industry roots, especially since its population has been declining and crime is high. There is little to see in the city, making it difficult for travelers looking for a good visit.
Stockton, California
Stockton’s high crime rate, financial struggles, and lack of tourist appeal are a combination of issues that can deter anyone. The city boasts some beautiful natural surroundings, but the urban experience can be underwhelming and, at times, unsafe for visitors.
Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis is nationally known for its music history and barbecue, but there’s another side. The city’s other attractions are overshadowed by its high crime rates and economic challenges, leaving many visitors wondering what to explore.
Bakersfield, California
As a tourist destination, Bakersfield is not known for its agricultural contributions. Boasting only a few attractions and a bad rap for poor air quality, it’s not the most appealing place to stop if you’re looking for a memorable trip.
Flint, Michigan
Flint’s water crisis has put the city on the map, and not for the right reasons. It is a tough place to visit, economically and socially, and few attractions offset the challenges of its people.
Newark, New Jersey
Newark’s proximity to New York City overshadows it. The rigid measures intended to attract tourists result in a city that needs to be revitalized. Still, crime and a lack of tourist-friendly spots make it a less-than-ideal destination for most travelers.
Bridgeport, Connecticut
Economic downturns and high crime have taken their toll on Bridgeport, which has seen better days. There are few attractions in the city, and people might have a hard time staying in this struggling urban environment.
Atlantic City, New Jersey
Atlantic City, a former gambling and entertainment hot spot, has fallen off the radar. Its casinos have closed, and the city now faces economic difficulties and a crime problem. It is no longer a glamorous destination.
