A honeymoon brings to mind candlelit dinners on the beach, romantic strolls under the stars, and all things dreamy. Unfortunately, the ‘perfect’ honeymoon destination isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It might even suck the romance out of your post-wedding bliss.

Before committing to a classic romantic getaway, let’s explore these so-called ‘honeymoon havens’ and why they aren’t exactly the dreamscape you imagine.

Paris, France

Ah, the City of Love! No one tells you how long the waiting lines are and let’s not forget the hordes of tourists vying for the same slice of romance. It can go from magic to dull, and fast, especially with the overpriced cafes and crowds at every famous landmark. You probably won’t find a quiet moment to get that Eiffel Tower selfie without sharing the frame with a bunch of strangers.

Venice, Italy

Gondola rides and narrow canals sound enchanting until you realize you’re on a boat with several other couples with the same idea. Venice is crowded, expensive, and frankly smelly at certain times of the year. A fairytale can quickly become you and your partner desperately searching for peace and quiet that simply doesn’t exist.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Crystal clear waters, check. Overwater bungalows, check. Complete isolation? Also, check. Bora Bora might look like paradise, but it can be a bit… boring. If you’re not someone who enjoys doing nothing but lounging around for days on end, you and your partner will have too much time to sit and stare at each other because there aren’t any activities.

Maldives

Yes, the Maldives are drop dead gorgeous, but they can feel like an epic quest to get to. You’ve been traveling for hours, on multiple flights, and a boat ride, and you may be too tired to appreciate those famous turquoise waters. The reality of limited dining options and pricey excursions could have you wondering if all that effort was really worth it, and unless you’re staying at an ultra expensive resort, you’re probably not going to be able to enjoy the peak of romance you imagined.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini is a postcard-worthy destination, but that’s the problem, it’s overrun with tourists and everything is more expensive than it should be. If you want to see the sunset in Oia, good luck finding a spot that’s not packed with hundreds of other honeymooners. Santorini is proof that crowds and romance don’t always go hand in hand.

Hawaii, USA

Hawaii is beautiful, but it is also popular among tourists. The island you choose to visit will determine whether you’re stuck in tourist traps, fighting traffic, and paying too much for everything. Hawaii’s honeymoon experience can leave you stressed out more than smitten if you’re looking for intimacy and seclusion.

The Bahamas

The Bahamas are a haven of white sand beaches and turquoise waters, but there’s a heaping helping of commercialization. Imagine cruise ships dumping thousands of people onto the same stretch of beach. You were hoping to enjoy in peace, instead, a crowded resort and a lot of competition for that quiet, romantic moment you were dreaming of.

Cancún, Mexico

Cancún has been a popular honeymoon haven amongst newlyweds and might seem like the ideal destination until you’re sharing the pool with a rowdy bachelorette party at an all-inclusive resort. If your descent into pie-eyed love and relaxation doesn’t involve listening to others’ loud music, or a throng of college students enjoying a crazy spring break then Cancún may not be the romantic oasis you hoped for.

Dubai, UAE

Dubai is flashy, no doubt, but the glitter and glamour can quickly become overwhelming. When you’re surrounded by skyscrapers, luxury malls, and extreme heat, it’s hard to stay in a romantic mood. And then there’s the conservative culture that may not be what some couples want in terms of affection and relaxation. Dubai is a show, not a honeymoon.

Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is a legendary place for its beaches and nightlife. There are some romantic spots to be explored, but the island can be a crazy blend of tourists, backpackers, and party people, and it’s hard to find those quiet, intimate moments you’re after. It’s great for adventure but not so much if you’re looking for a laid-back, romantic escape.

Jamaica

Jamaica’s all-inclusive resorts sound great, but the truth is that they are too often more like a tourist factory than a romantic getaway. You will find hundreds if not thousands of other honeymooners trying to beat you to the best spots on the beach or booking dinner reservations at the ‘in’ restaurants. This might not be the intimate experience you were hoping for.
