Washington’s Most Haunted Locations
Washington State’s misty forests, towering mountains, and historic towns are the backdrop for spooky encounters and sites that most dare not explore.
Some of the state’s most haunted destinations, where history and hauntings meet, are sought out for the thrill, but some stumbled upon the supernatural activities by accident. If you’re brave enough to look, here’s a guide to a few of Washington’s most famously haunted places.
Hotel Sorrento, Seattle
Hotel Sorrento in Seattle is known for more than its upscale, historic charm. Guests have reported seeing the apparition of Alice B. Toklas, a woman who might have lived in the area in the early 1900s. Many times, it’s reported that Toklas was seen in her beloved room, 408. She’s a bit of a prankster, moving things around and making strange noises in the night. Guests say they feel her uncomfortable presence as if they are being watched in her room.
Campbell House, Spokane
While Spokane’s Campbell House is a time capsule of Edwardian architecture, its haunted history keeps ghost enthusiasts trooping in. It is said that the house built in the late 1800s by the owners Grace and Amasa Campbell is haunted by them. Visitors have reported cold spots, footsteps in empty rooms, and occasionally, ghostly figures. The creepy energy waxes stronger as you approach the basement where many have claimed to feel an overwhelming sense of unease.
Oxford Saloon, Snohomish
The Oxford Saloon in the quaint town of Snohomish isn’t just charming, it’s haunted. The building was a saloon, brothel, and a place of violence and mysterious deaths, at one time. A small man named ‘Henry’ is said to haunt the basement. Visitors have experienced strange sensations and have been grabbed by unseen hands.
Bellingham — Mount Baker Theatre
While the Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham may seem like an old fashioned family friendly venue, it holds a spine chilling secret. The theater is reportedly haunted by a ghost called Judy, who whispers to patrons and sometimes even interacts with staff. Performers and stagehands have also reported shadow figures in aisles, or footsteps in the empty theater.
Sedro-Woolley Northern State Hospital
An asylum for the mentally ill, Northern State Hospital is abandoned, but it is a hot spot for paranormal activity. The crumbling buildings and overgrown grounds have a haunting quality of their own. Many visitors hear whispers, laughter, and even screams while visiting the area. Others have said they have seen ghostly figures through the broken windows of the hospital or glimpsed patients wandering the halls.
Thornewood Castle, Lakewood
Thornewood Castle, which appeared in Stephen King’s *Rose Red* mini-series has become one of Washington’s most haunted places. Built in 1908, it has been at the center of a few rumored hauntings and sightings of ghosts. A lady in white is reported to walk around the halls, parts of the house experience chills and drafts that seem to come from nowhere, and unexplained lights flicker in empty rooms. Because of its mysterious energy, this castle is popular with paranormal investigators.
Maltby Cemetery, Maltby
Just outside of Seattle, Maltby Cemetery has a reputation as darker than most graveyards. The “13 Steps to Hell” is a famous story that says you will experience something otherworldly if you descend the 13 steps located there. The actual staircase has long since been removed, but that has not quelled the many spooky tales about this cemetery.
Fort Vancouver, Vancouver
Some of the former and long-deceased residents of Fort Vancouver, a historic site that dates back to the 1800s, still seem to linger on the premises. A bustling trading post with military barracks and a medical outpost, it is now rumored to be populated by the ghosts of its former residents. Some visitors claim to have seen the ghosts of soldiers still dressed in uniform patrolling the grounds. Fort Vancouver is a popular haunt for those who don’t mind a scare.
Old City Hall, Tacoma
Another haunted building is Tacoma’s Old City Hall. The hall, which has stood since 1893, is said to be haunted by former employees and visitors who won’t move on. Voices, footsteps, and even the sound of an old-fashioned typewriter clicking away have been heard by security guards and nighttime visitors. Old City Hall is one of Tacoma’s most unnerving places to visit, made all the more so because of the ghostly apparitions seen here.
Roxy Theatre, Longview
While the Roxy Theatre in Longview may be small, it packs quite the paranormal punch. Mary is the ghostly resident of this theater built in the 1930s. Cold drafts, flickering lights, and the feeling that she is watching from the seats are common ways she communicates with the living. Patrons, as well as theater staff, have reported hearing whispers and feeling a gentle touch on the shoulder, almost as if an unseen entity were sitting next to them.
