Some places on our planet are so intense they seem to have jumped straight out of a horror movie. As if their mysterious and spine-tingling atmosphere is not enough, these locations are often accompanied by local myths and spooky tales.

Aokigahara Forest, Japan

Located at the base of Mount Fuji, Aokigahara is otherwise known as the Suicide Forest. No sounds can be heard at the site and the paths are twisty which often leads visitors astray; however, this is not what makes it horrific. Hundreds of people died here and it is believed that their spirit still haunts the forest. A walk through the woods of Aokigahara brings the feeling of eerie calm and the disturbing reminders of those who never made it out.

The Catacombs, France

Deep in the belly of Paris lies the gritty underworld. The Catacombs are rooms in which the remains of six million people are arranged into semicircular rows. Their skulls and bones are heaped on top of each other to create a nightmarish tomb in extremely narrow passages that are poorly lit. Developed to address the overcrowded death pits that were once city cemeteries, these catacombs are now tourist sites for anyone willing to venture in. It is silent, damp, and alarming.

Poveglia Island, Italy

Venice’s neighbor island is certainly one of the most eerie places on earth; Poveglia Island. This little island has a long history. Plague victims were often transported here and isolated from the rest of civilization and later on, it was used as a mental institution. Thousands of people were tortured and eventually died here. locals stay away from the Island and tourists who have ventured into the island have reported hearing voices, seeing shadows, and the eerie feeling of being followed.

Hoia Forest, Romania

More famously known as the ‘’Bermuda Triangle of Transylvania,” Hoia Forest is said to experience ghostly occurrences. There have been mysterious sightings as well as the feeling of impending danger and discomfort. Some people claim to have spotted UFOs and experienced time lapses. The stories alone do not contribute to the eerie experience, the trees and fog around the Hoia Forest do a good job of that as well.

Pripyat, Ukraine

Pripyat was a city that housed many of the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and today is a deserted city. In 1986 after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the city was abandoned and schools, hospitals, and amusement parks were left deserted. The main source of spookiness in Pripyat was the sudden desertion leaving it looking frozen in time. Its inhabitant’s possessions can still be seen lying around. Toys were abandoned, and the giant Ferris wheel looms in the distance, rusty and idle. This is one of the most alarming places on the planet due to the increased level of radioactivity.

The Stanley Hotel, USA

Estes Park, Colorado is home to the inspiration behind Stephen King’s The Shining: The Stanley Hotel. Some of the reported occurrences include; people seeing ghosts and hearing eerie piano music from an unoccupied piano. It seems that room 217 where King stayed during his visit, is one of the most popular for stories about ghosts. The setting of the hotel will make the tiny hairs on the back of your neck tingle.

Island of the Dolls, Mexico

Try to picture an island covered with old, dusty, mold-ridden dolls nailed to trees—each more terrifying than the other. That is exactly what you will find on the Island of the Dolls situated in the canals of Xochimilco near Mexico City. The tale is that the spirit of a young girl who drowned on the island is being ‘fed’ with dolls that are hanged by the island’s present-day custodian. People say they can hear voices, see the dolls’ eyes tracking them, or see the dolls move. It’s the stuff of nightmares.

The Eastern State Penitentiary, USA

Once functioning as the priciest and most technologically advanced prison in America, the penitentiary of Eastern State in Philadelphia is now half-ruined and home to many eerie tales. People at this prison were tortured and kept in isolation, and it is believed that many of them went insane. The prison is now defunct and can toured by many visitors who claim to have heard voices, seen shadowy figures, and felt intense fear on seeing the state of the place.

The Winchester Mystery House, USA

Sarah Winchester, the wife of the Winchester rifle manufacturer, constructed the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose California and is a seven-storied house with many peculiar features such as doors and staircases that open to walls or other rooms with windows looking into each other. Some state that Sarah constructed the house to drive the apparitions of the Winchester rifles’ victims insane. Little wonder then that moving through the house you quickly become overwhelmed by fear and the feeling of no escape.

This is a classic fairy tale castle in the Loire Valley and it might seem like a perfect place to live but it is not. The green lady, the apparition of a noblewoman murdered by her husband, apparently traverses the halls haunting visitors. She wears a green dress and her face is battered, bloody, and bruised from the abuse. Visitors and employees have claimed to see her ghost, hear her vocalization, and feel cold sensations in the large, although eerie, castle.
