15 Destinations That May Look Safe but Are Too Risky to Visit Alone
Going for an adventure alone can surprisingly feel liberating and fun. “The solo trend started more than a decade ago and has continued to gain steam. Back in 2017, 27% of travelers were solos. In 2019, it was 39%, and 47% in 2021. Today, it’s 50%.”- Forbes.
Despite alluring solo travel, some destinations seem charming but unsafe for solo travelers. So here’s a list of 15 places that, though beautiful in their unique ways, still need you to take extra safety measures.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The city records high rates of crime, such as pickpocketing and muggings. The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED) reports, “At the same time, violence targeting civilians increased by 17% between 2020 and 2021 and by 48% between 2021 and 2022, while reported civilian fatalities during the same periods increased by 44% and 26%, respectively.”
Despite this, Rio is renowned for its beaches, samba beats, and carnival. Sugarloaf Mountain sunsets are magic.
Mexico City, Mexico
Petty crime and scams are common in Mexico City, and a solo traveler might be easily targeted. The United States Department of State highlights the prevalence of internet romance and financial scams, advising travelers to stay vigilant.
Nonetheless, the city has incredible Art, history, and tacos. If you are a culture enthusiast, visit the Frida Kahlo Museum.
Caracas, Venezuela
Due to its high crime rates, Caracas is one of the most dangerous cities in the world. According to 2024 research by Forbes Advisor, it tops the list of the most unsafe cities for tourists.
However, the city has incredible mountain views and fun street art. Having locals you can trust will make the experience safer.
Delhi, India
Delhi has vibrant streets but can be overwhelming and unsafe, especially for solo women travelers. A research article published by Frontiers states that crimes against women were at 67% nationwide in 2022, with Delhi holding the highest crime reports.
The city is colorful and worth exploring, so the secret is to travel during the day and avoid secluded areas.
Cape Town, South Africa
The city has some safety and crime-related concerns, like theft and carjacking. Between 2022 and 2023, cases of attempted murders increased by 13.7%, and carjacking reports rose by 8.5%- David McKenzie and Sarah Dean for CNN.
Consider walking with a group, and don’t pick deserted areas. However, in Cape Town, you’ll be blown away by the views of Table Mountain, wineries, and wildlife.
Cairo, Egypt
In Cairo, petty theft and scams targeting tourists are common; therefore, tourists are advised to look for a trusted guide for excursions.
On its official website, the Government of the UK notes that popular tourist spots like the Giza pyramids have been reported to have many hostile scammers targeting tourists. Nonetheless, it is a famous destination for its historical significance and the pyramids.
Kingston, Jamaica
Reggae rhythms and the beautiful lush mountains are pure bliss. Yet, other areas of Kingston have high crime rates.
Issuing travel advice to travelers on their official website, the Government of Jamaica mentions the high violent crime rates in parts of Kingston attributed to the widespread availability of firearms.
Manila, Philippines
Manila is one of the most dangerous cities in Southeast Asia. Thefts tend to take place in crowded areas. “The city received a crime index score of 64.23, with a high rating of 72.51 in overall crime, 71.26 in property crimes, and 71.12 in violent crimes.”- Antonio Iñares.
Manila stands out for its modern architectural scrapers, plus the sunsets over Manila Bay are dreamy and unforgettable.
Istanbul, Turkey
Tourists might be troubled by political unrest, scams, street robberies, and pickpocketing here. The government website reports that protests happen occasionally and can turn violent.
Yet, Istanbul is enchanting, especially the Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar.
Bogotá, Colombia
The city is known for pickpocketing and theft and is considered unsafe for travelers. According to an assessment by Dragonfly, a geopolitical and security intelligence service, robberies increased by 78% from 2020 to 2023.
However, it is a city worth a visit. It is full of charm, and the street art is amazing.
El Salvador
Gang activity is prevalent in El Salvador, making it risky for a solo traveler. Writing for InSight Crime, Alex Papadovassilakis states, “The government also estimates that 53 armed groups remain in El Salvador,” suggesting at least some gang structures remain, even if dormant.”
Conversely, El Salvador’s volcanoes and beaches are magnificent, and El Tunco is a dream place to surf.
Moscow, Russia
Solo travelers in Moscow face language barriers and scams. Also, it can be pretty challenging for American citizens to tour Russia. “The Department has determined that there is a continued risk of wrongful detention of U.S. nationals by Russian authorities.”- The United States Department of State.
Regardless, Moscow is awe-inspiring, and the architecture is breathtaking.
San Pedro Sula, Honduras
The city is struggling with a tremendous crime rate. San Pedro Sula reported the highest number of crimes from 2020 until 2024, as reported by Allan Buis for Contra Corriente, an investigative journalism platform.
Once there, stick to tourist-friendly spots. Still, San Pedro Sula is a nature lover’s paradise, primarily due to the mountains around it.
Tijuana, Mexico
Drug cartel-related violence and petty crimes make it challenging for travelers to have solo adventures. In a 2022 article, National Public Radio highlights the rise in cartel gang violence in Tijuana, with cartels challenging the government and taking over neighborhoods.
Despite that, Tijuana’s energy is impeccable. The city is filled with creativity, and the food is fantastic.
Jakarta, Indonesia
The city can be overcrowded, making one an easy target for pickpockets. Kompas, an Indonesian national newspaper, writes that in 2023, Jakarta recorded a significant increase in crime rates. Traveling alone might not be such a great decision.
Yet, Jakarta’s street food and shopping malls are phenomenal. Also, the National Monument is legendary.
