15 Cruise Mistakes I Regret – What I’d Do Differently from Booking to Dining
I’ve cruised for years and learned far more than I’d like to admit about what not to do on a cruise. From rookie errors that cost money, wasted time, and even lost experiences I would have loved, I was a wide-eyed rookie traveler.
As an experienced cruiser, I’m here to help improve your first voyage by telling you about some of my mistakes on my first oceangoing vacation. Before you set sail, read these 15 lessons I learned the hard way.
Overpacking Your Suitcase
You may fill your suitcase to the brim in the fear that you’re ready for anything—and if you’re not, you’re making a mistake. Cruise ship cabins are small, leaving little space for even excess luggage. Choose multipurpose items.
A recent Paul Gauguin survey showed that layering, mixing, and matching your outfits doesn’t have to sacrifice variety at the expense of packing space. You’ll save space and thank yourself later.
Missing Out on Pre-Cruise Research
A colossal oversight is assuming that everything onboard will suit your tastes. No two cruises are the same; each has different experiences, dining styles, and excursions. The same applies to other parts of our vacations.
If you fail to research, you risk disappointment. Websites like Cruise Critic and Ship Mate have reviews, activities, and insider hints for specific ships. Dig in a few hours, and your experience will be infinitely more rewarding.
Booking the Cheapest Cabin
Bargain hunters, beware! Selecting the cheapest cabin may appear sensible initially, but that often means sacrificing comfort. You get lower-priced cabins next to noisy spots such as the engine room or the club. They can interfere with your sleep and trip quality.
Cruise ships are constantly improving their service—a J.P. Morgan Research study backs this up. Investing in a mid-range cabin is worthwhile. You reside closer to amenities and get better views.
Skipping Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is not something you can do without. You might think, “What could go wrong?” A missed flight or sudden illness can quickly turn your dream trip into a nightmare. Without insurance, you might be paying the big bucks.
A Business Insider survey conducted recently in 2023 found that only 38% of travelers buy travel insurance. Comprehensive travel insurance costs 4–10% of your trip but can save you thousands in an emergency; play it safe.
Failing to Pre-Book Excursions
You may be locked out from shore excursions if you don’t book in time. They fill up fast. Having your booking onboard drastically increases your chances of missing out on the best activities. But worse, you’ll often pay a premium at the last minute. Once they’re available, lock in these experiences.
Not Researching Ports of Call
You need to plan to experience the unique charms of many ports properly. Identify must-see landmarks, restaurants, and cultural spots using Rick Steves’ guides or local travel blogs. Adding a little homework to your port days can help elevate them.
Neglecting Specialty Dining Reservations
Specialty dining offers some gastronomic treasures. Some exclusive restaurants often feature star chefs, unique menus, and elevated dining experiences.
The results, published in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research, show that specialty dining increases passenger satisfaction. Book up fast—reserve yours early.
Arriving Late for Boarding
The fastest way to spike your stress levels on boarding day is by arriving late. A flight setback or unexpected traffic means you may scramble and miss the ship. It’s always good advice to come one day early — industry advice. Sleeping near your port will keep your mind at ease.
Ignoring the Daily Schedule
Every cruise ship distributes a daily activities planner. You could miss a special event, party, or deal if you skip it. Write it into your morning routine to plan your day. Every veteran cruiser begins by turning on alarms for wine tastings, live theater shows, or other exciting events.
Underestimating Onboard Expenses
Assuming that cruises are all-inclusive is a rookie misstep. Most come with extra charges for drinks, specialty dining, spa treatments, and tips.
For instance, in the second quarter of 2023, Carnival Corp passengers spent an average of $81 daily on extras. That way, you won’t be hit with sticker shock when these are factored into your budget.
Forgetting Comfortable Footwear
Of course, it’s great to look stylish, but never at the cost of comfort. You walk more than you think on cruise decks and shore excursions.
According to a recent poll of TripAdvisor users, many cruisers suffer from footwear discomfort. Pack sneakers or cushioned sandals because your feet will thank you.
Not Carrying a Day Bag
Going out to explore without a day bag can leave you fumbling around with sunscreen, water bottles, guidebooks, and anything else you might have in your pack. It’s unnecessary and cumbersome. Pick a light backpack or crossbody bag to carry your essentials up and down the ship and shore.
Forgetting Sunscreen and Hydration
Sunscreen and water are two things you need in your bag when you’re living the cruise life, with its sun-soaked days. If they’re forgotten, it’s painful burns or dehydration.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, SPF 30+ protects you from burning skin cancer. Invest more in a reusable water bottle to reduce plastic waste and stay hydrated.
Overlooking Spa Deals on Port Days
Discounts are available on onboard spas on days most passengers are ashore. Skipping this insider tip means you could be passing up treatments that are half as expensive. Book port-day spa sessions and take advantage of lower prices while using other amenities in more tranquil settings.
Not Disconnecting from Work
The whole point of vacation is lost if you continue working. Checking emails or calling constantly takes time away from relaxation.
Experts at Harvard Business Review say that vacationers who unplug entirely to rest, sleep, and relax do better. They argue that doing this gives one more mental space for new ideas and perspectives.
