12 Ways to Annoy TSA Agents
Nobody’s favorite part of flying is navigating airport security. Unfortunately, certain behaviors unnecessarily frustrate TSA agents, prolong processing time, and create undue stress.
Are you unsure what to avoid when going through security? Here’s a list of common irritants that will put you in the bad books of the TSA agents.
Leaving Liquids Loose
If you leave liquids loosely in your bag, the TSA will take them despite your protestations. Ignoring the 3-1-1 rule will cause delays and ultimately annoy the agents.
Each passenger is only allowed to bring 3.4 ounces of liquids, gels, and aerosols, and they must all fit into one clear, quart-sized zip-top bag. Having your liquids mixed up or messy will force agents to stop and sort through your things, which takes time and holds up the line.
Ignoring the “Everything Out” Bin Rule
The TSA reminds travelers that laptops, tablets, and anything bigger than a smartphone must be removed from bags at security checkpoints.
Failure to follow these instructions may result in extra screening. Eliminating these items makes scanning more efficient and less likely to produce a false positive.
Wearing Complicated Shoes or Accessories
You must remove your shoes around security checkpoints if you’re not part of TSA PreCheck. Knee-high boots, lace-up shoes, or shoes with metallic parts cause unnecessary delays.
If traveling, choose slip-on shoes so you don’t have to hassle with bothersome shoelaces. Accessories, such as large belt buckles or large and excessive jewelry, also set off alarms and require further inspection.
Packing a Cluttered Bag
Disorganized and overpacked bags slow TSA staff down and frustrate passengers. Digital imaging of a properly packed and organized bag makes it easier for X-rays to see what you’ve packed. Pack cubes or clear pouches are a worthwhile investment to keep your stuff neat and make security checks go faster.
Bringing Wrapped Gifts
Passing wrapped gifts through security may seem innocent, but TSA agents must check for items inside the gift. This is time-consuming for agents and can damage your wrapping efforts. Arrive at your destination and use gift bags.
Joking About Weapons or Bombs
Joking about weapons, explosives, or any security threat is never taken lightly by anyone and never appreciated.
These comments are taken seriously by TSA agents who are trained to make safety a priority. In attempting to play for laughs in these ways, you can expect to be delayed, asked further questions, or fined.
Ignoring Security Instructions
Following the TSA agent’s instructions is essential to keep the process smooth and ensure everyone goes through it safely.
Not listening or trying to undermine each order will slow the agent’s workflow and might lead to extra extreme screening steps. When you respect their role, you will see fewer roadblocks.
Forgetting your Passport or your boarding pass
Arriving at TSA without proper identification or boarding passes slows the process down. However, the TSA has begun accepting mobile IDs at some airports.
You have additional verification steps if you forget your passport (which happens most often). Before you get in the line, double-check that these documents are saved easily and ahead of time to save yourself time.
Packing Prohibited Items
Prohibited items can get you pulled out of line, and you can slow down security lines. Large bottles of liquid, pocket knives, and lighters are among the usual culprits.
The TSA says it confiscated 6737 firearms at airport checkpoints in 2023 alone, 93% of which were loaded. However, it’s always a good idea to double-check the TSA’s prohibited item list before heading to the airport to ensure everything you’re bringing goes according to plan.
Trying to Smuggle Food Without Approval
Many people bring loose food items, including soups, sauces, or yogurt, which can lead to confusion and delays. TSA’s guidelines speed things along by allowing solid foods but no liquid or gel-based items larger than 3.4 ounces.
Holding up the line Getting Dressed
Congestion comes after the checkpoint, where you get your things on the conveyor belt and dress yourself. TSA agents anticipate that passengers will continue to move through the facilities without incident. If you need time to reassemble your belongings, take them quickly and step to the side.
Showing up for Additional Screening Unprepared
Travelers are sometimes randomly chosen for additional screening. If this happens to you, cooperating and being prepared to comply makes it faster for everyone. Complaints only create friction in the process and delays in your traveling.
Traveling by air can be stressful, but being more aware of these common challenges makes us all more comfortable as travelers and TSA agents. Using these tips, you’ll have less trouble with the security checkpoint and get to your destination sooner.
