Often we judge countries by reputation, news headlines or stories we’ve heard from others. And some places might have a rough image due to political unrest, long history of conflicts, or stereotypes. Surprisingly, many countries with questionable reputations are actually quite safe to visit, with their environment not matching the rumors about them.

While these nations might not be the top of your travel bucket list, they have safety records which would embarrass many of the more popular destinations.

The Caribbean’s safest place is Cuba, which has long been a mysterious communist outpost with a rocky relationship with the West. Touristic safety is a priority for the Cuban government, as crime rates are extremely low, even in the most touristic cities Havana, Varadero or Trinidad. It’s true that petty theft can happen, as in any destination, but violent crime is rare and you’re more likely to be offered a helping hand than to encounter danger.

Myanmar’s reputation has always been marred by political upheaval, while news of civil unrest makes it appear chaotic. Most of Myanmar is still safe for travelers, however, and many popular destinations such as Bagan and Inle Lake are safe. People of Burma are known to be hospitable, and tourists are normally respected.

Colombia

In recent years, Colombia has worked hard to put its violent past, linked to drug cartels and crime, behind it. Once famous for high crime, cities like Medellín are now some of the world’s most forward looking hubs. Tourism has boomed in recent years and Bogotá, Cartagena and Medellín, the country’s most popular destinations, are much safer than most people think.

Serbia

Serbia might be known for its part in the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s, but today it’s one of Europe’s safest countries. The capital, Belgrade, is lively and with a welcoming atmosphere. Tourists generally find it easy to get around the country safely and violent crime is rare. Serbia is a hidden gem, and it doesn’t get as much attention as other European countries, but if you’re looking for a mix of history, culture, and safety, Serbia is just the place.

Iran

The media image of Iran has been mostly political tension and protests. This has given the impression that it’s not safe. However, according to Global Finance, it ranks as one of the safest countries to visit. Cities like Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz welcome visitors warmly and are safe to explore. Tourists rarely become victims of crime, and the streets are well-patrolled.

Cambodia

Cambodia has a history of the Khmer Rouge, and of internal strife, but that’s all in the past. It’s now a peace filled and welcoming site with considerably less crime than other Southeast Asian countries. Tourist destinations include Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville and travelers are safe as long as they follow basic precautions. Budget travelers will find Cambodia is also incredibly affordable.

Petra, the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum attract tourists who don’t have to worry for their security. Jordanian government ensures the safety of visitors, and people of Jordan often keep things positive with stories of how locals welcomed them in.

Most people overlook Oman as a travel destination, sometimes because it is in a region that is associated with conflict. But it is one of the safest countries on the planet. Established in 1970 and set across 800 square miles of rolling sand dunes, the crime rates are low and Omani society is famous for its respect and hospitality to tourists.

Often, the country is associated with the 1994 genocide, but it has turned the corner, and is now one of the safest environments in Africa. The capital is especially known for its cleanliness and low crime rates, and Kigali is especially so. With peace of mind, visitors can explore the country’s natural beauty including the famous mountain gorillas.

Vietnam

Vietnam’s modern day safety is often overshadowed by its history of war. While it has a turbulent past, it’s come out as one of Southeast Asia’s safest countries for travelers. Cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang are busy but safe and tourists rarely encounter serious trouble. More touristy areas can be a problem for petty crime but this is rare. Vietnam is a great place for solo travelers or someone looking to see a rich culture with little stress.
