If you’re an adrenaline junkie who craves crazy and unique experiences then you’ve probably already checked off all of your typical adventure spots. Many places in the world are so daring that only a select few are brave enough to even set foot in. Danger isn’t just a possibility here, it’s practically a given. These are the holy grail for true adrenaline junkies, the kind of places where you don’t just experience the rush, you respect it.

These locales may sound like an adventure lover’s paradise but they are real risks. These dangerous destinations take the envelope of what’s safe to extreme altitudes and fierce wildlife. For those who are willing to take on this challenge however, the reward is not only hard to earn, but almost as difficult to forget— that feeling of success that very, very few get to share. If you’ve got nerves of steel and a thirst for the wild side of life, then let’s get into these ten adventure spots that are almost too dangerous to handle.

Mount Huashan, China

Mount Huashan is the site of one particularly famous ‘Plank Walk in the Sky’, a narrow pathway made from wooden planks bolted to the mountainside thousands of feet above the ground. Adventurers must clip onto a safety rope, but that’s about all the protection they get. The views are jaw-dropping and the fear factor is high, so it’s a climb where every step is a heart-stopping experience.

Skeleton Coast, Namibia

The Skeleton Coast of Namibia isn’t just barren, it’s deadly. Its nickname, “The Land God Made in Anger,” tells you all you need to know about this stretch of desert coastline, which is riddled with shipwrecks. It’s a place known for violent weather, harsh landscapes and dangerous wildlife, so even the most daring travelers have a hard time. The payoff? An eerie, other worldly scene, found nowhere else on Earth.

Devil’s Pool, Zambia

Devil’s Pool is located at the edge of Victoria Falls, with swimmers able to take a thrilling, heart-stopping dip just inches away from the waterfall’s 300-foot drop. Thrill-seekers have to wait until the flow decreases in certain months when the river dwindles to be able to jump into this natural pool and stare down into the abyss. The excitement is such that the adventure is as dangerous as the fear of being swept over the falls with one wrong move.

Danakil Depression, Ethiopia

The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest, most inhospitable places on the planet — with temperatures soaring above 120°F. It’s a land of bubbling lava lakes, toxic gases, and scorching salt flats. Some are attracted to its alien landscapes and extreme conditions. This is not a journey for the faint of heart, the extreme environment can kill you if you’re not ready for it.

Mount Washington in New Hampshire is one of the world’s deadliest peaks, despite its modest height. Wind speeds on the mountain have been known to reach 231 mph and temperatures can drop without warning. Even experienced hikers can tread cautiously here, where climbers often face hypothermia and frostbite, even during warmer months.

Madidi National Park, Bolivia

This isn’t your run-of-the-mill jungle expedition. Some of the most dangerous plants and animals on Earth live in Madidi National Park, and simply brushing up against the wrong leaf can cause intense pain or worse. Its isolation, and assortment of venomous snakes, insects, and toxic flora, pack a punch and would be a bad idea for an inexperienced traveler to visit. This wild terrain is only explored by seasoned adventurers and researchers.

Lake Natron, Tanzania

Lake Natron is beautiful, with its stunning red waters, but it’s also deadly. Temperature reaches 120°F, pH up to 10.5 is caustic enough to burn skin and eyes on contact, and the salt lake consists of around 30 percent of sodium carbonate, making it one of the richest of all the salts. Such extreme conditions mean the rest of wildlife avoid the lake, except for some hardy flamingos; the lake’s eerie and stark beauty also attracts only the boldest of explorers.

Drakensberg Traverse, South Africa

The Drakensberg Traverse is a trek through rugged cliffs and perilous drop-offs in South Africa’s mountain range. There are no markers on the trail, and climbers must traverse steep rock faces with little or no support, relying on their own skills. The Drakensberg is not an adventure without treacherous paths and unsurpassable weather. Only a steel mind may dare to attempt such a journey.

Darien Gap, Panama Border-Colombia

The Darien Gap, between Colombia and Panama, is a wild, lawless stretch of dense jungle and swampland known to be as dangerous to humans as it is to nature. The journey is risky at best, filled with venomous snakes, armed guerillas, and drug traffickers, and locals advise against crossing. Only the most intrepid adventurers have been known to come here.

Oymyakon, Russia

Oymyakon is the coldest place inhabited place on earth. The weather can get as low as -60°F in winter. Living here is a war against the elements. Stepping outside requires several layers and intense preparation. Remote, freezing, and the ultimate test for those who want to know just how tough life can be on the edge of human habitation.
